Talking Trash...

Here at our house we live on a county road where the speed limit is 40 mph...but of course, people do at least 50 mph much of the time...It is usually busy only during rush hour times - the rest of the day and night it is pretty quiet, though...Well, there is no sidewalk in front of our house so when we put out our garbage and/or recycling we either put it on the small retaining wall we have at the end of the driveway or right next to it...Anyway, whenever the garbage/recycling men empty our cans & go to put them back, they kind of just slide them back to the end of our driveway - (I guess they have such pressing schedules that they couldn't possibly have the time to actually put the cans back where they got them from...that would be too much to ask).
Well, their lack of attention to detail on their job results in our trash cans being knocked over into the road by the very large tractor-trailers thundering past our house during the morning rush hour...By the time I am able to get out there I actually have to walk down the road past my neighbor's house to retrieve the cans, which by then have been obviously hit a couple of times by various cars & trucks as they went by. I then walk back with my crumpled trash cans, trying to push out the dents from the inside to the best of my ability, and put them behind our deck until we go through the whole entire ritual again in a few days...
Well, five garbage cans later I have gotten smart about this & it has become my mission to run out as soon as the garbage/recycling truck pulls away to get my can (I emphasize the word can because we were so tired of buying new trash cans & having them smashed, now we only have one!) and bring it back to the house as quickly as possible so no one sees me in my just-woke-up hairdo, coat over the nightgown with workboot style that I am usually sporting at that time of the morning...
Anyway, we seem to have resolved the trash can issue, but the recycling one is another story...Our lovely township-provided blue recycling can got hit a few weeks ago & is now in three pieces...It has been sitting in a pile on the side of our house because frankly, I just couldn't figure out what to do with it! It is plastic, so do I "put it out for recycling"? I was afraid that they wouldn't take it...Well, today was the day! I just got tired of looking at it (plus I needed more leaf bags - yes, leaf bags - We're finishing up raking all of our leaves since it was snowing in the beginning of December here and they were covered in a blanket of snow & ice. ) I piled the three kids into my van & headed on down to the Dept. of Public Works to recycle this smashed recycling can & inquire about having them replace it...Well, first of all - They only provide one can for free - if we want another one we have to pay for it - I am not even going to go there & discuss how the reason that we need a new one in the first place is because their workers caused my free one to get smashed to bits!
After my conversation with that guy, I drove over to the recycling bins & was about the heave the pieces of my recycling can into the big bin when a guy comes out of nowhere (& totally scared me by the way) & tells me that I can't put it in there - I was like, "It is plastic, right?" Then I got a quick lesson on the different types of plastic, their different numbers & the little recycling triangle found on plastic bottles, etc...After that, he told me I had to drive it over to the very far wall & put it over there...so I did.

Well, I just wanted to share my trash story/ saga with you all. I wish I had a funnier story to share like my sister-in-law Mary has about a stray cat & two crazy dogs, but she refuses to get her own blog & just sends out e-mail blogs! Maybe someday she'll get her own blog, then I can put the link on here & you all can read her funny stories & see all of her great pics that she takes! Come on Mary, don't leave me alone in the blogsphere...
